Heisey by Imperial #1506 Provincial Tumbler
Heisey by Imperial #1506 Provincial Tumbler |
The amethyst colored tumbler is probably from a dark batch of Imperial's Azalea color (formerly called cranberry). This image is courtesy of Rocky Mueller.
The tangerine colored tumbler is most likely ruby fired a bit too long or else an experiment. Image courtesy of Beverly Anderson.
Heisey originally named this pattern Whirlpool; it was made only in crystal and zircon.
According to Measell's "Imperial Glass Encyclpedia, Vol III", Imperial purchased the molds and in the 1960s produced Provincial items in Amber, Antique Blue, Azalea, Blue Haze, Nut Brown, rose Pink, Ruby, Sunshine Yellow, Ultra Blue and Verde.
What may be confusing about the reddish tumbler is that it is identical to a Tangerine color produced by Heisey and that it has a polished bottom and is marked Heisey. Since Heisey stopped using the tangerine color before Whirlpool / Provincial was introduced, it is likely that this was Imperial's ruby, perhaps fired a bit too long so that the color turned orangey. A ruby Imperial #727 bowl here in the Gallery has the same orangey color as this tumbler.
Also, the initial release of Imperial's Heisey was still marked with the H-in-diamond and had polished bottoms. Later, the Heisey mark was replaced with a star and the bottoms were no longer ground. |
